Recurring vs One-Time Cleaning: Which One Keeps a House Clean

One-time cleans and recurring service solve different problems. Here is what each is good at, why we only take recurring clients, and how to pick a frequency.

Phil Harper

People mean two different things when they say they want the house cleaned.

One is: I want it clean on Saturday, because people are coming over. The other is: I want to stop thinking about all this mess. Most of the frustration around hiring a cleaning company comes from spending money on one when you wanted the other.

What a one-time clean is good at

A one-time clean is the right choice when there’s a date attached. A party, a family visit, a move, the end of a renovation, getting a house ready to list. The job is to get the home to a particular state by a particular day, and a good deep clean does that well.

It’s also the right choice if a house basically hasn’t been cleaned for a while. Some homes need a reset before any cleaning routine makes sense.

Where a one-time clean falls short

After a one-time clean the house, of course, starts getting dirty again immediately, and the next big cleaning has to pick up in whatever state the house is in. Every one-time cleaning is a catch-up job and is usually priced accordingly. Three cleanings a year means paying three times to bring the same house back to the same place.

What recurring service does differently

Recurring service is a different job from a one-time clean repeated on a schedule. The house never gets far from clean, so no cleaning visit starts with a backlog of work to do just to get to baseline.

When a crew arrives at a home that was cleaned two weeks ago, the whole visit goes to the things that need attention now. Simply put, a maintained home takes less time to clean per visit than the same home cleaned twice a year. That’s also why weekly service has the lowest per-visit cost of the three frequencies we offer.

If you want that breakdown in dollar terms, we’ve written it up in the long-term savings of recurring house cleaning.

Why we only take recurring clients

WellNest takes recurring weekly, biweekly and monthly clients only. We turn down one-time work, and here’s why.

One-time jobs are unpredictable in a way recurring work isn’t. A clean estimated at three hours can turn into six, because nobody knows what state a house is really in until the crew is standing in it. When that happens the whole day’s schedule is thrown for a loop, and the recurring customers scheduled after it get a crew that’s hours late.

For us, it’s a tradeoff. We give up some revenue, but in exchange we can show up in the window we promised for our regular customers, and that’s extremely important to us.

Picking a frequency

Factors that determine the best frequency for regular cleaning include how many people live in the house, whether there are pets, how much square footage there is, and how much of the day-to-day you want to keep yourself.

  • Weekly is great for full houses, homes with shedding pets, and anyone who wants the between-visit effort close to zero. It has the lowest cost per-visit.
  • Biweekly is what many families choose. Enough that nothing too big builds up between visits.
  • Monthly works for smaller households, and for people already doing a solid daily pass who want the deeper work handled.

There’s no contract with WellNest. You can pause, skip a visit or change cadence, and many clients move between frequencies seasonally. We go through how this plays out across a year in the best cleaning schedule for keeping your home fresh year-round.

Pricing runs on bedrooms and bathrooms, but the clean covers the whole home: kitchen, living and dining rooms, bedrooms, offices, playrooms, stairs and hallways. There’s a room-by-room breakdown in what a house cleaning includes.

If you need one clean, right now

Then we’re not the right company for you, and we’d rather say so than take the booking.

Ask whoever you do hire two things: what exactly is included, and what the hours estimate is. The estimate is where one-time cleans can go wrong, and a company willing to put a range in writing before it arrives is a better bet.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you offer one-time cleanings?

We don't, and it's on purpose. WellNest takes recurring weekly, biweekly, and monthly clients only, and that's actually a benefit to you. One-time jobs are unpredictable: a clean that should take three hours can turn into six, which throws off the day and makes the team late for their regular customers. By sticking to recurring work, we can show up when we say we will, give your home the time it needs every visit, and keep your service consistent. Saying no to one-times is how we protect the reliability our recurring clients count on. It tends to be easier on the budget, too: because the home stays maintained between visits, the per-visit price is lower than a one-off deep clean, and spreading the cost across the month lands more comfortably than a few large charges a year. You can pause, skip, or change cadence anytime, and there's no long-term contract.

How much does cleaning cost?

For a three-bedroom, two-bathroom home in Northern Virginia, a recurring cleaning is $285 a visit monthly, $214 every two weeks, or $200 weekly. Cleaning more often costs less per visit, because the home never gets far from clean. Your own price depends on the size of your home. Enter your ZIP code, bedrooms, bathrooms and how often you'd like us, and you'll get an exact number in under a minute. It's a flat rate, so the price you see when you book is what you pay.

I see your pricing is based on the number of bedrooms and bathrooms in the home. But what about the kitchen, living room, dining room, stairs, etc.?

The cost as shown on our Home Page is inclusive of the entire home, unless otherwise requested. We simply use the number of bedrooms and bathrooms for pricing purposes as it is the most efficient and simple approach.

How does scheduling work, and what if I need to cancel or reschedule?

Recurring service runs on a fixed schedule (weekly, biweekly, or monthly) on the day and arrival window we agreed up front. Rescheduling is straightforward. Let our office know and we'll work with you to find another slot. To avoid a $50 cancellation fee, please give us notice by 3 pm the day before your scheduled cleaning. The same fee applies if we arrive for a scheduled cleaning but aren't able to gain access to your home.

What if I'm not happy with the cleaning?

Tell us within 24 hours of the cleaning, and we'll come back and re-clean any area that was missed or didn't meet our standards at no additional charge. That's our 100% Satisfaction Guarantee. If a regular contact path didn't get it resolved, Phil's email is phil@gowellnest.com and it goes straight to him.
