Every year around this time we hear a version of the same thing from families across Northern Virginia: the house was fine in July, and now it looks like this. What happened?

What happened is the schedule. A house with school-age kids doesn’t get dirtier during the school year so much as it gets dirty on a rhythm, in the same four or five places, on the same days. And the weekday evening when you used to have time to clean now belongs to homework, dinner #1, practice, and then dinner #2 before bed.

So it isn’t a matter of how to do one big reset clean in mid-September. It’s what routine will keep your house clean throughout the year.

What the school year does to a house

Four things show up in almost every home we clean:

• The entryway takes the whole load. Backpacks, shoes, sports bags, lunch boxes, paper. In most homes this is one small area doing the work of an entire room.

• Laundry stops being a weekly event. Practice clothes, uniforms and towels arrive on their own schedule now.

• The kitchen runs a second shift. Breakfast and lunch prep in the morning, homework at the table in the afternoon, then dinner #1 before practice, then dinner #2 after practice, and then lunch prep again.

• Bathrooms turn over fast. Everyone in the house uses them inside the same 40 minutes.

None of that is a deep-cleaning problem; it’s a frequency problem. The surfaces and areas that need attention are the ones being touched every day, and now they need attention more often.

Set the routine now, not in October

In our experience, whatever cleaning rhythm a household can establish in the first few weeks of the school year is the one it can keep until the holidays. It’s very hard to build a new routine in the middle of November. So in the first month of school it’s worth considering what happens every week, rather than waiting for one big catch-up clean that the house will undo in no time.

The catch-up clean may feel productive, but it’s repeated, regular cleaning that’s really needed.

What a recurring visit covers, and what stays yours

We want to be clear about what we can cover and what you will still need to pay attention to.

On our visit: we clean the whole home. Kitchen, bathrooms, bedrooms, studies, playrooms, dens, offices, every floor and every surface that needs consistency more than intensity. Between visits: the drop zone by the door, the laundry and the daily kitchen reset. That’s typically about 15 minutes a day, and it’s effective because the underlying house is already clean. The same 15 minutes in a house that hasn’t been cleaned in six weeks accomplishes very little, which is why it sometimes gets skipped entirely.

The other thing September brings

Anyone who has had a kid in school knows what arrives about three weeks in. A classroom is thirty people sharing air and door handles, and what circulates there comes home with your child, and in her backpack.

We’re not going to claim a cleaning service prevents anyone from getting sick, because it doesn’t. What it does do is keep the high-touch surfaces in the house on a short cycle: door handles, light switches, faucet handles, stair rails, the fridge door, the bathroom surfaces everyone uses in the same 40 minutes. Picking a frequency for a school-year household

The key inputs are how many people are in the house, whether there are pets, how much square footage there is, and how much of the between-visit reset you want to manage yourself.

Weekly service offers the lowest per-visit rate, because the house stays maintained and each visit requires less catch-up. Biweekly is what many families with school-age kids choose. And monthly works well for smaller households and for homes where someone is already keeping up with the daily pass.

Back to school in McLean
